Ruth Barton, 95, Of Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Ruth Williams Barton of Fairfield died Dec. 29 of pneumonia. She was 95.

Barton was born June 1, 1917, in Nashville, Tenn., to Robert H. and Harriet Burrus Williams. She grew up in West Hartford, Conn., and graduated from Oxford School. She attended Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, Mass., and The Art Students League of New York.

She was married to John S. Barton, who predeceased her. Barton pursued additional education throughout her life, including at the Cordon Bleu and Silvermine College of Art. Painting and sketching were her favorite artistic pursuits, as well as playing the piano.

Barton was a former member of the Junior League of Greater Bridgeport, Museum of Art, Science and Industry, Black Rock Yacht Club, Pequot Yacht Club and Brooklawn Country Club.

She learned to sail so she could participate in her husband's favorite hobby and was an avid golfer until the age of 92. As a member of the Junior League, she designed and made puppets used to teach elementary school children about art.

Barton is survived by two daughters, Janet Barton Mostafa, of Pasadena, Calif., and Cairo, Egypt, and Joyce Barton (Bruce) Bertschmann, of Falmouth, Mass.; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons. She was predeceased by her husband; and a son-in-law, Hatem N. Mostafa.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport. Burial was private. Spear-Miller Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
