FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Richard Francis Tyler died Tuesday, June 25. He was 86.
Tyler was born Oct.18, 1926, to John Edward Tyler and Frances Slade Tyler of Worcester, Mass. He was a native of Worcester, Mass.and was a resident of Fairfield for over 57 years. He attended high school at Worcester Academy, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of the Holy Cross, a Master Degree in Education from Boston College, and a Master in Business Administration from New York University. He worked in industry for over 22 years, first with Sikorsky Aircraft and then with the Perkin-Elmer Corporation.
In 1977, Tyler embarked on a second career, joining the faculty of the Fairfield University as an assistant professor of Management in the Department of Business Administration, which subsequently became the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. He also held multiple positions within the Dolan School, including area coordinator of Management, and membership on committees related to accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. He was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society in 1997. In recognition of his dedication and service, Fairfield University named him assistant professor of Management, Emeritus upon his retirement in 2005.
Following his retirement from teaching, Tyler dedicated himself to St. Pius X Parish, and was in the prayer ministry, helping hands ministry, spiritual reading group and other church activities for many years. He was a member of the Gaelic American Club, and a former member of the Patterson Club.
Tyler is survived by his children Jane (Curtis) of Charleston, S.C., Richard (Susan) of New Orleans, La., and Christopher (Kathleen) of Stratford; nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Ann Crotty Tyler; and siblings, John, Robert, Elizabeth and Francis.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 28 at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29 at St. Pius Catholic Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield, followed by interment in Oaklawn Cemetery.
