Mildred Schweitzer, 84, Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Mildred Jane Schweitzer, of Fairfield, wife of 60 years of James A. Schweitzer, died Tuesday, Jan. 19 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. She was 84.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Gilbert and Gertrude Krut, she had been a Fairfield resident for over 20 years. She was a graduate of Mount Lebanon High School in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and received a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University. She was secretary to the chief legal council at the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company in Pittsburgh, and after moving to Connecticut, was employed by the University of Bridgeport, where she retired as administrative assistant to the president.

She taught English as a second language in Bridgeport, Fairfield and Essex, was an active volunteer and caretaker for Hospice in Essex and up until her death, was a volunteer along with her husband in the short-stay unit at St. Vincent's Medical Center.

She is survived by five sons, John Schweitzer and his wife, Cynthia Couphos, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Paul Schweitzer and his wife, Donna, of Rockford, Illinois; David Schweitzer and his wife, Kelley Douglass, of Weston; Chris Schweitzer of New Haven; and Daniel Schweitzer of Nashua, New Hampshire; a daughter, Marybeth Gondoly and her husband, Stephen, of Bethel; nine grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Jane Marinucci, of Houston, Texas; and several nieces.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Bridgeport, with the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Mark Hahneman, rector, officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service. Interment will be private.
