Gilbert was born in Jamaica, N.Y. and raised in Bridgeport, son of Kenneth Gilbert and Lucille Piner, he had been a Fairfield resident since 1962. John served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958-1962. He was a retired employee of Rotair Industries in Bridgeport. He served as past commander of American Legion Post #143 and also served as chaplain of the Third District American Legion. He was a member and past chaplain of the Fairfield Elks Lodge.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Beth Gilbert (Kathy) Hughes of Guilford and Lynn Hasak (James) of Fairfield; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, James Piner and Kenneth Gilbert; sister, Karla Edwards; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.
Calling hours are Tuesday, May 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. Services and interment will be private.
