John 'Jack' O'Leary, 91, Retired Police Captain

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – John "Jack" T. O'Leary, a retired Fairfield police captain, died Aug. 7 at his home in Bridgeport, with family at his side. He was 91.

The son of Thomas J. O'Leary and Helen Walsh O'Leary, his father was assistant fire chief in Bridgeport. After graduating from Harding High School in 1939, O'Leary served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945 as a gunner's mate first-class.

He was a Bridgeport firefighter for a year before joining the Bridgeport Police Department in 1947. His career spanned 30 years and he retired as a captain. After retirement, he was a bailiff in the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department for several years.

O'Leary was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fairfield Gaelic-American Club, Germania Schwaben Club, Retired Bridgeport Police and Fire Association and the Police Association of Connecticut.

O'Leary is survived by five children, Patricia O'Leary, of Ivoryton, Conn., Mary McNiff, of Orange, Conn., John (Karen) O'Leary, of Stratford, Thomas (Janice) O'Leary, of Merritt, N.C., and James (Tatiana) O'Leary, of Norwalk; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Curley O'Leary; and a sister, Helen O'Leary Shea.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, at Larson Funeral Home in Bridgeport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church in Bridgeport. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Stratford. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Jim McNiff Memorial Golf Tournament For Kidney Cancer Research at the Yale Cancer Center, 36 Indian River Road, Orange, CT 06477, or to a favorite charity.
