James J. Schanck Sr., 62, Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – James J. Schanck Sr., of Fairfield, the husband of 32 years of Patricia (Tortora) Schanck, died Friday, Jan. 15. He was 62.

He was born in Oceanside, N.Y., to Harold J. and Olga (Rascius) Schanck. He grew up in Woodcliff Lake, N.J. He was a graduate of Saint Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, N.J., and the University of Dayton. He eventually settled in Fairfield to raise his family and begin his career in marketing.

He was the president of JS Marketing, a Connecticut-based marketing services company that he founded in 1989. His clients included Klaff's, NuKitchens, Sotheby's International and Elite Limousine, among many others. He began his career in New York at agencies such as Dancer, Fitzgerald & Sample, Benton & Bowles, Needham Harper and Lambert Dale. His clients were brands in the automobile, consumer products and food industry such as Times Mirror, Rolls Royce, Toyota, Yugo, Xerox and Nabisco. 

He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed Fairfield American Little League games. He was a guitarist and founder of the Mill River Band, which performed gigs throughout Fairfield County. He was happiest when he was with his family and friends enjoying the sunshine, the beach, good music and laughter with those he loved.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Jacquelyn and Katherine of New York City, and James Jr. of Fairfield; his brother, John Schanck and wife, Laura, of Madison, N.J.; his sister, Lorraine Stanley and husband, George, of Brielle, N.J.; and many nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was predeceased by his sister, Kathy Wennerberg.

Friends may greet his family on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Fairfield. Interment will be private.
