Edith Moore, 88, Longtime Fairfield Resident

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Edith Dent Moore of Southport died Sept. 11 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport. She was 88. 

Moore was a co-founder of the Fairfield Women's Exchange in Southport, where she was active on the board for many years.

She was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Philadelphia to Edith Houston Baily and Magruder Dent. She graduated from Rosemary Hall in Greenwich in 1941 and attended Bryn Mawr College. During World War II, she volunteered with the Red Cross and worked at Random House. 

A resident of Fairfield since 1955, Moore also had a second home in Jupiter, Fla. She was active in the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church and was a member of Country Club of Fairfield, Fairfield Garden Club, Fairfield County Hunt Club, Pequot Yacht Club and National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York.  

Moore was also a member of the Women's Metropolitan Golf Association. A gardener, she maintained the colonial era gardens at Ogden House in Fairfield for many years. Moore was a trustee of the Union Theological Seminary in New York City from 1970 to 1978. 

She also served on the boards of the Child Guidance Center of Greater Bridgeport, Goodwill Industries in Bridgeport, Greens Farms Academy and Fairfield Historical Society, where she was involved in the formation of the Fairfield Museum. 

Moore was also a member of the board of the Aspetuck Land Trust. She served for a term on Representative Town Meeting in Fairfield. She supported the Bridgeport Symphony in Bridgeport, Connecticut Audubon Society and the National Association of Research in Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders. 

Moore was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Eugene Maxwell Moore; a daughter, Margaret G. Moore; and a brother, Magruder Dent Jr. She is survived by three sons, Eugene M. (Edie) Moore, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Michael D. (Deirdre) Moore, of Fairfield, and Douglas G. (Peggy) Moore, of Fairfield; a daughter, Edith M. (Michael) Blair, of New York City; a brother, Frederick Baily Dent, of Spartanburg, S.C.; a sister, Diana Gwyn Dent, of Greenwich; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8 at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church in Fairfield. Burial will be private. Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield is handling arrangements.
