Dr. S. James Baum, M.D., 91, Of Fairfield, Physician

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Dr. S. James Baum, M.D. of Fairfield died Tuesday, Oct. 15. He was 91.

Dr. Baum was born in Bridgeport; son of Samuel and Sadye Baum. A well respected physician, he was Chief of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Park City Hospital from 1954 to 1991 and served as president of the Medical Staff from 1972 to 1974. His private practice was located in Fairfield. He was a graduate of the University of Vermont Medical School, served his internship at Bellevue Hospital and his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital. He served in the U.S. Navy as the assistant chief of ENT at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bremerton, Wash.

Dr. Baum was a member of his community. He read weekly to third and fourth grade students through the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport for over 18 years. He was a member and former president of the Fairfield Beach Resident's Association, and served as a commissioner of the Town of Fairfield's Shellfish Commission and also the Flood and Erosion Commission.

Dr. Baum is survived by his wife, Edie Baum; children, Michael Baum (Vera); Stephen Baum of New York City; Jamie Baum (Jeff Hirshfield) of New York City; sisters, Gloria Wank (Gerald) of Great Neck and Bette Lee Stern (Aaron) of Greenwich; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Gerald Baum (Louise) of Fairfield.

Funeral services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at Congregation B'nai Israel, 2710 park Ave., in Bridgeport.
