FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Donald J. Cavanaugh, Sr., a lifelong Fairfield resident, died Friday, March 8. He was 82.
Cavanaugh was born March 7, 1931, son of James and Elizabeth Cavanaugh. He graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School, where he was captain of the football team.
He was a proud Marine Corps veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. After being honorably discharged, he became a police officer for the Town of Fairfield, where he served for 33 years, retiring as a detective.
He was a life member of many organizations, including the Disabled Vets, American Legion Post 74, Knights of Columbus, Fr. Coleman Council, the VFW, the Police Benevolent Association, the Police Association of Connecticut and the Fairfield Boat Owners Association.
Cavanaugh is survived by his wife Ethel; children, Peggy Cavanaugh, Donald Cavanaugh Jr. and his fiancée Nancy Basset, and Kathleen Bacon (Steven); three granddaughters; five sisters, Isobel Broadhurst, Dolores Benson, Jeanne Cushion, Joan Cavanaugh, and Barbara-Ann Cavanaugh; sister-in-law Marge Trup; and many nephews and nieces.
Calling hours are Tuesday, March 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. an the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road, in Fairfield. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
