Wrong-Way Driver Faces Drug Charges in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Bridgeport man faces drug charges after a traffic stop in Fairfield Wednesday evening, police said.

Julio Padilla, 23, first caught the arresting officer’s attention by driving the wrong way in reverse on Morehouse Highway, police said.

Padilla was stopped just before 9 p.m. in the area near Lake Mohegan. A Fairfield officer said he saw him travelling west on the road and stop suddenly. Padilla then put his car in reverse and began heading east while staying in the westbound lane, according to the police report.

The officer reported smelling the scent of burnt marijuana while talking to Padilla, and that a passenger in the car admitted to having smoked the drug recently. A search of the car turned up four individually wrapped bags of marijuana underneath the car’s driver's seat, according to the police report. About 200 unused plastic baggies and an undisclosed amount of cash also were in the glove box, police said.

Padilla was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and issued infractions for possession of drug paraphernalia and less than a half ounce of marijuana. He also was given a ticket for unsafe backing. Padilla was released on a promise to appear in court May 15.
