Workers Deal With High Temps In Fairfield Hotspot

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—No matter how hot you feel Thursday afternoon, just be thankful you’re not Tara Sabin and Will Dailey. The two have only open doors and industrial-size fans to protect them from the heat emanating from 525-degree ovens. The two work at Beach Side Deli and Pizza, which just might be the hottest place in Fairfield on this scorching day.

“You get used to it,” Dailey says. “When you’re in here every single day, you don’t even feel the heat. But when it’s extra hot like today and it gets humid, you’ve got to drink a lot of water.”

The thermostat on Beach Side’s wall read 96 degrees Thursday afternoon. But with the temperatures outside clocking in at 92, one could doubt the digital readout’s accuracy. “It gets to a point where it just stops working,” says a fellow Beach Side employee who asked to be called “Joe Pizza."

Asked how they deal with the sweltering temperatures, Daily and Sabin offered the same advice the Health Department gives. They make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. They wear loose-fitting, light clothing. And though they can’t make it to cooling centers like the Fairfield Public Library or other air-conditioned areas, they can at least get out of Beach Side’s heat periodically to catch the breeze coming off Long Island Sound.

“We just step outside once and a while to get some air,” Sabin says. “It’s not so bad.”
