A New York state woman accused of embezzling more than $26,000 from a Fairfield company turned herself in to Fairfield police Tuesday. Lorraine Cochrane, 42, of Bohemia, N.Y., allegedly took money from the Fairfield firm through the payroll company she founded and owns.
The victim called Fairfield police on Feb. 14 after he noticed the misappropriation of money from his companys bank account. At the time he told police at least $20,000 was missing from the account, which Cochranes payroll company had access to. He later received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service that his company owed $26,700 in back taxes.
The Fairfield companys owners said Cochrane did not answer repeated phone calls and e-mails when he attempted to find a reason for the missing money. He told police that when he finally did meet with Cochrane, she admitted taking the money from his account and from other clients. It is unclear exactly how much money was stolen from the Fairfield firms account.
After an investigation by the Detective Bureau, Fairfield police issued a warrant for Cochranes arrest. She came in to Fairfield Police Headquarters Tuesday and was arrested on a charge of first-degree larceny. She was released on a promise to appear in court April 4.
