Wire Work May Cause Overnight Traffic Jams On I-95 In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Drivers may experience overnight traffic jams on Interstate 95 in Fairfield and Bridgeport this weekend as work is done on overhead wires, the Department of Transportation announced on its website

Several nighttime traffic stops will occur along I-95 north and south and at the Route 25/8 interchange in Bridgeport and Fairfield on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, between midnight and 6 a.m., DOT said.

Motorists are warned to expect significant delays during traffic stops and consider alternate routes.

Traffic stoppages will occur in 10-minute intervals approximately three times to allow for the pulling and tensioning of aerial wires that cross I-95. Two locations must be completed.

The first location is the crossing at South Avenue located south of on ramps from Route 25 & 8 and Myrtle Avenue (Exit 27A and Exit 27) scheduled for Friday. The second location is Route 130, Fairfield Avenue (Exit 25) area, scheduled for Saturday.

The traffic stops will affect traffic on I-95 as well as adjacent ramps entering or exiting the interstate. The operation is weather sensitive and will be rescheduled to May 10 and 11, if needed.

Closure information for Friday:

  • I-95 closed in both directions between Exit 26 and Exit 27A
  • On Ramp from Route 25/8 to I-95 south closed
  • On Ramp from Wordin Avenue to I-95 north closed
  • On Ramp from Myrtle Avenue to I-95 south closed

Closure information for Saturday:

  • I-95 in both directions in vicinity of Exit 25

The work is part of a DOT project that includes an overhaul of the overhead catenary wire system and replacement of five bridges on Metro-North's New Haven Line between Bridgeport and Fairfield. The contract was awarded to Ducci Electrical Contractors of Torrington.
