William Fitzpatrick, 88, Ex-Fairfield Treasurer

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – William J. Fitzpatrick Jr. of Fairfield died May 28. He was 88. 

Fitzpatrick was the retired president of Fitzpatrick Agency Inc., founded by his father in 1919. He also served as treasurer for the town of Fairfield for six years. 

He was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Bridgeport to William J. Fitzpatrick and Edith O'Hara Fitzpatrick. He managed the insurance agency with his brother, Bob, for many years. Fitzpatrick's son, Paul, is the third generation to run the agency.

A 1948 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Fitzpatrick served with the 6th Army Headquarters and 158th Regimental Combat Team during World War II in the South Pacific, Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star by Gen. Walter Krueger.

Fitzpatrick was active in the Fairfield Democratic Party, serving as treasurer of the Democratic Town Committee for 27 years. He was a member of the Board of Finance for 13 years, the last two serving as chairman. Fitzpatrick also served as chairman of the Police Station Building Committee.

He was a member of the board of directors of the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County and a founding member of the Action for Bridgeport Community Development. A longtime parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fairfield, Fitzpatrick was a member of the original parish council. He served on the parish finance committee for six years and was a lector for 25 years.

Fitzpatrick also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He played and watched sports with enthusiasm. He loved the New York Giants and was Grasmere School horseshoes champion in the seventh and eighth grades. A strong competitor at charades, he enjoyed playing family games at the family beach houses in Milford and Salisbury.

Fitzpatrick is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eileen Foley Fitzpatrick; two sons, William (Miriam) Fitzpatrick III and Paul (Michelle) Fitzpatrick; two daughters, Alice Ann (Michael) Bologna and Eileen (Dr. Joseph) Fickes; a brother, Robert H. (Jane) Fitzpatrick; two sisters, Edith Louise (Ed) Webb and Sister Gail Marie Fitzpatrick, O.C.S.O.; and 10 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Margaret Smith; and a brother, John T. Fitzpatrick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield.
