Truck Crash Cuts Power to Fairfield Homes

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A two-vehicle crash on Congress Street early Tuesday morning knocked out power to nearby homes and landed one driver in the hospital. Fairfield Fire Department crews say the incident caused a utility pole to catch fire.

The accident occurred on Congress Street near Brett Road. Firefighters arrived to find a that pickup truck had collided with a utility pole, causing the pole to snap and trap the driver inside. The impact caused a transformer at the top of the pole to catch fire, which spread to the rest of the structure. Fire crews also found a second pickup nearby, which had crashed into a tree.

The two drivers were the only ones inside the vehicles at the time of the accident. Firefighters removed the trapped driver, who declined treatment before being taken into custody by Fairfield police. The driver who collided with the tree was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

Congress Street was closed for much of the morning while emergency responders cleared the accident. United Illuminating cut service to residents in the Congress Street area so firefighters could safely put out the flaming utility pole. As of 10:30 a.m., the company reported no further outages in Fairfield.
