TPZ To Take a Swing at Ball Field

The game isn't over yet for Fairfield's planned Hoyden's Hill Lane softball field. Opponents will have one more at-bat at a Town Plan and Zoning Commission hearing on the project Tuesday, Aug. 24.

The TPZ is the final town body that will vote on the $350,000 plan. It has been approved by the Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance and Representative Town Meeting and withstood a referendum challenge by opponents, who believe it is not the right time to spend money on the field.

Last Thursday voters said "no" to the field by a 2-to-1 margin, but the votes against (2,404 vs. 1,168 for) were not enough. Twenty-five percent of Fairfield's registered voters – more than 8,000 – needed to say no for the project to be scrapped.

The TPZ must sign off on the Park and Recreation's application for construction to begin.

Residents of the Hoyden's Hill area, as well as other opponents, have said they will attend the hearing. They argue that they field does not fit the neighborhood. The TPZ will approve or deny the application at a meeting later in the year, not immediately following the public hearing.

The field includes bathrooms and parking lot improvements that will be shared with the neighboring public driving range, as well as other necessities for a town park. The Fairfield Little League Girls Softball organization will pay for amenities, such as dugouts and storage space.
