TP&Z Delays Softball Field Hearing

Supporters and opponents of the $350,000 Hoyden's Lane softball field will have to wait to have their voices heard in the final step of the approval process. A public hearing set for Tuesday night was moved to Sept. 14 because a traffic study had only been completed Monday. The town asked the Town Plan and Zoning Commission to postpone the hearing so commission members and the public could review the study.

The TP&Z has to approve plans for the field and park infrastructure, as well as changes to traffic flow in the area, for construction to begin.

Opponents include neighbors concerned about changes in traffic and those who object to the price of the field or the elimination of open space. They plan on turning out in large numbers on Sept. 14, but their comments will be limited to the plans for the field and zoning regulations. The cost and environmental issues will not be open for discussion.

The traffic study, conducted by Frederick Clark Associates, shows that an average of 72 vehicle trips an hour would be made on weekends, when games are being played. Traffic would be less on weekdays, when the field would be used only for practices. The group wants the town to add speed limit, curve-warning and stop signs.

The project includes the field itself as well as bathrooms and a new driveway that will be shared with the neighboring driving range. Other park infrastructure will be built by the town, while the softball league will pay for items such as benches and storage space.
