Town Honors Its Grants Winner

Assistant DPW Director Ed Boman has brought millions of dollars into Fairfield’s town coffers over the year. Wednesday night the town showed it’s appreciated with a big “Thank you.” The Board of Selectmen honored Boman with the 2010 Town Employee of the Year Award for his work securing state and federal grants.

“The grants that he’s brought in were easily on the other side of $55 million,” said DPW Director Richard White, who nominated Boman for the honor. “It’s really amazing.”

Boman started his career with the town in 1968, working 16 years as chief aide to then-First Selectman John Sullivan. With help from grants Boman secured, the town was able to set aside 1,000 acres of open space at Lake Mohegan, Brett Woods, Penfield Beach, Ash Creek Marina, Perry’s Mill Pond and Sasco Creek, as well as “urban beautification” spots at Sherman Green and along Mill River. His grants also helped to build Sullivan Independence Hall and to do sewage treatment plant upgrades.

After Boman did a stint in the private sector, White convinced him to join the DPW in 1993. While there, Boman has mostly focused on the town’s energy supply, working to get the town cleaner electricity and saving energy at town buildings.

“Each year, Ed comes up with ideas that are totally new, totally different, totally modern,” said First Selectman Kenneth Flatto. “That just epitomizes his career.”

The selectmen surprised Boman with the award at a ceremony before their meeting at Independence Hall Wednesday. He joins past winners Barbara Brosnan (2004), Terry Dunn and Charlie Savoid (2005), Raymond Agostino (2006), William Hurley (2007), Scott Bartlett (2008), and Barbara Hawkins (2009).

“I appreciate everything very much,” Boman said after receiving his prize. “I’ll continue to [work] as long as I can.”
