Town Celebrates Arts All Weekend

As power returns to homes across town and the summer sun replaces dreary rain clouds and harsh winds, two events, an arts and crafts show on the town green during the day and the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Pops Concert at night, provide a perfect opportunity to get outside, while supporting local artists at the same time, this weekend.

The fact that Fairfield has declared this June the first annual arts month, makes it an even more opportune time, as the month of activities wind to a close. To top it all off, admission to both events is free.

On Saturday morning the 48th annual Fairfield Chamber of Commerce Arts and Crafts Show kicks off on the Town Green outside of Town Hall, with exhibitors opening their tents and displays at 10 a.m. The show runs until 5 p.m. on Saturday and then again from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It provides an opportunity to browse through original art and even make a purchase to add to your collection if a piece strikes your eye.

"There is something to please all tastes and price ranges: watercolors, oils and acrylics, photography, pottery, jewelry, toys, furniture (both indoor and outdoor), leather bags, canvas totes, accessories, florals and more," said Chamber President and CEO Patricia Ritchie.

This year Ritchie said a "for the first time a farmers' market will be part of the arts and crafts festival. The market will showcase Connecticut-grown produce, like fruits and vegetables, honey and cheese.

After a visit to the show, you can head down to the Fairfield University campus, where music will fill the summer night's air, starting at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by the university's own music professor Brian Torff and his jazz quartet.

That will be followed by the 15th annual Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra's Pops Concert. Under the direction of guest conductor Matthew Savery, the orchestra will play pops favorites, including light classics, Broadway hits and feature Soprano Ashley Harrington, who won the 2009 Jenny Lind Competition. No tickets are required and concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and picnic baskets to enjoy while viewing the concert on hill outside the university's library.
