FAIRFIELD, Conn. A small fire dealt approximately $6,000 in damage to a Fairfield home Tuesday evening. Fairfield fire officials believe that the blaze started when a discarded cigarette ignited an outdoor planter.
The fire first sparked at 673 Old Stratfield Road at about 6:30 p.m. When Fairfield Fire Department crews arrived, they found a neighbor attempting to put out the blaze with a bucket of water. At that point the fire had spread to the homes back deck and about 15 feet up the buildings vinyl siding.
Firefighters managed to put out the blaze quickly, but not before it ruined about 50 feet of siding and some shrubbery lining the home. The damage was estimated at $6,000. No residents or firefighters were harmed in the fire.
The resident at the house told fire crews that she had discarded a cigarette in a planter near the back deck. Investigators found that the planter was filled with dry moss, not pure dirt, which caught fire. The incident was ruled an accident.
