Tax Rate Changes Lead Fairfield's Week In News

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield’s taxes and spending drove much of the news this week, with cuts to town spending and a tax rate increase both made official. Here are some of Fairfield’s top stories from the last week.

? The Representative Town Meeting finalized Fairfield’s town budget Monday night, reducing spending for Fairfield Public Schools, road paving and other areas. It also voted in support of a nonbinding resolution urging state leaders to vote for labeling on foods with genetically modified organisms.

? With the budget done, the Board of Finance set Fairfield’s mill rate for the next year. The new mill rate is 23.93, a 2.4 percent increase from last July.

? The Board of Education also had budget talks this week. Superintendent David Title released a list of proposed changes to his spending plan Tuesday in response to cuts carried out by other boards. The board will vote on his proposal May 21.

? In other schools news, Fairfield students earned major honors this past week. Fairfield Warde’s Shannon Magnaldi won a regional art competition and will have her work displayed in the U.S. Capitol. And a team from Stratfield School earned a trip to the World Finals of the Odyssey of the Mind academic competition.

? In crime news, Fairfield Police made an arrest in two cases at once Monday, charging a Westport woman with theft relating to bad checks at a Fairfield store and leaving a hit-and-run accident in separate incidents. Officers also arrested a suspect who they believe is connected to a series of burglaries around Fairfield on Tuesday, police said.
