Suspect Charged in Fairfield Armed Robbery

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Shelton man was charged with a pair of armed robberies to Fairfield businesses Saturday. Christopher French, 36, also is a suspect in similar incidents in Bridgeport and Stratford, police said.

The most recent alleged robbery occurred at Sahara Tanning Salon on the Post Road Friday evening. A clerk at the salon told police she saw a man pacing outside the store at about 6 p.m. that night. The man then entered the business, asked a question, and showed the clerk a silver and black handgun tucking into his waistband, police said.

The suspect then ushered the employee into a back room and took money from the cash register, police said. The clerk came out of the room after the man had left and called police. Investigators linked the crime to an alleged similar incident April 30 at Adam’s Bakery. A similar suspect allegedly flashed a weapon and demanded the money from the cash register in that case as well, police said.

The Fairfield Police Department’s investigation identified French as the suspect in both robberies, police said. He was arrested Saturday in Trumbull. Bridgeport and Stratford police also interviewed French as a suspect in robberies in those towns, according to police reports.

French was charged with first-degree robbery and fifth-degree larceny in connection with the incident at Adam’s Bakery. Charges in Friday’s robbery are pending, police said. He was held on a $500,000 bond and taken to court Monday morning.
