State Eases Way for Holiday Travelers

If you're planning to travel over the holiday weekend, the state has a present for you: all lanes will be open on major highways. The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced Thursday that there will be no lane closures on any highways due to construction. All projects will be halted from 6 a.m. on Friday, July 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday July 6.

Current construction projects in the region on Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway have slowed traffic to a halt during overnights and early mornings in the past few weeks.

In the Fairfield-Trumbull region of the Merritt Parkway, a $66 million project is underway to widen the parkway, as well as resurface it and update bridges in the region. That has caused traffic delays frequently on both the North- and South-bound sides of the highway. But weekend travelers will be in luck, as no construction will be taking place.

Construction for emergencies may still take place.
