Longtime Fairfield resident Stanley V. Krygier died at his home Sunday at the age of 99. Krygier was a World War II veteran and a former volunteer firefighter.
Krygier was born in Poland on April 18, 1911. He came to the United States with his family at the age of 3, and settled in Greens Farms before moving to Fairfield in 1922. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served at Fort Ord and in the South Pacific, reaching the rank of sergeant by wars end.
When he returned home, Krygier worked his entire life in either Fairfield or Westport, mostly at Devores Bakery, until retiring in 1978. He was also a member of the Fairfield Fire Departments Hook and Ladder No. 1 for many years.
In his spare time, Krygier most enjoyed reading. But he was also an avid golfer and tennis player, taking part in many tournaments throughout his life. He also loved to spend time in his garden, and was a member of the Westport Fish and Game Club.
Krygier never married, but was very much a family man. He is survived by his sister, Florence K. Gregg of Westport and her companion, Luis Paz, a sister in law, Anne Krygier of Westport, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by all of his brothers, Cohen, Edward, Benjamin and Joseph, and his sisters Stella Lewis, Lydia Sebeck, and Irene Burba.
St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield will hold a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m., followed by interment with full military honors at St. Thomas Cemetery in Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
