Special Olympics Torch Run Steps Off Across Fairfield

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – In preparation for the Special Olympics Connecticut annual Summer Games, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will make its way across Fairfield County on Friday.

The torch run, which began in other parts of the state Wednesday, will make its way to New Haven for the opening ceremony at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Southern Connecticut State University. 

Over 1,500 police officers from across the state volunteer to be torchbearers and carry the Special Olympics “Flame of Hope” through the towns and cities they serve to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics and inspire communities to accept and respect people of all abilities. 

The officers will collectively cover more than 530 miles during the three-day run. Special Olympics athletes will also participate in select towns.

To find a torch run, check www.soct.org. Here are the routes in Fairfield County: 

  • Leg 9: From New Milford to Bethany will run from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and travel through Bethany, Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Milford, Newtown, Oxford, Prospect and Southbury
  • Leg 9a: From 9 to 11 a.m. from Wilton, to Ridgefield
  • Leg 10: Greenwich to New Haven from 8:30 a.m. to  5 p.m. will travel through Bridgeport, Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, Milford, New Haven, Norwalk, Orange, Stamford, Stratford, West Haven and Westport.

Special Olympics Connecticut will hold its annual Summer Games, from Friday to Sunday, June 5, 6 and 7, at Southern Connecticut State University and Hamden Hall Athletic Fields.

Over 2,400 athletes and Unified Sports partners are expected to compete in cycling, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, tennis and track & field events.

Opening Ceremonies will take place on Friday, June 5, at 7:15 p.m. at the Jess Dow Field on the Southern Connecticut State University campus.

Summer Games competitions and award presentations will take place on Friday afternoon at SCSU and throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday at SCSU and Hamden Hall Athletic Fields.

All are invited to Opening Ceremonies and events throughout the weekend to be inspired and cheer on athletes of all abilities. There is no cost to attend. For more information, visit www.soct.org or call 203-230-1201. 

During the weekend, a Healthy Athletes Village will be set up on the SCSU campus to offer athletes participating in the Games free health screenings to check eyes, ears, teeth, and feet and information and items - such as free eyeglasses - from volunteer medical practitioners to enhance their fitness and overall well-being. A lineup of entertainment and Olympic Town, an area where all can enjoy educational, cultural, interactive and creative activities is also planned.

In addition to the athletes competing, over 500 coaches and 2,800 volunteers are expected to support the event.
