Fairfielders worried about identity theft can take old documents to the Fire Department's headquarters on Reef Road Saturday morning. Fairfield Police, with the help of Police Explorers like Andrew Tisdale, will run a Shred Day from 9 a.m. to noon October 2.
Proceeds benefit the Police Explorers Post 279. The program takes boys and girls ages 14 to 21 with an interest in law enforcement and joins them with Fairfield police officers for activities and training.
Secure EcoShred will handle the shredding and recycle all documents when the day is finished. The cost is $10 per copy-paper sized box. Police suggest you get there early: At the shred day in April, a line of 40 cars stretched around the block before shredding even began. When asked at the time how many boxes they took in total, Detective Belinda Papageorge, a Police Explorers alum and advisor, said, "I have no idea. It's been non-stop all day."
