Save Your Skin With a Free Screening

As summer days at the beach grow closer, it is important to remember to care for your skin in the hot sun. Doctors from Cohen Dermatology Associates of Fairfield will provide three free skin cancer screenings at Penfield Beach on June 25, July 16 and Aug. 6, to help make that point clear. The event is being arranged by CancerCare of Connecticut.

The screenings, hosted by Dr. Jason McBean, Dr. Ivan Cohen and Dr. Elizabeth Smith, will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on each Friday listed, rain or shine. "More than 1 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, making it the most  common form of cancer," said McBean. "Screening is an early way to detect pre-malignant lesions as well as possible skin cancers."Skin cancer can be curable when treated early, according to McBean. However, fewer than one-third of Americans regularly examine their skin and more than half would not know how to recognize melanoma (a type of tumor most frequently found on the skin). The screening process will not only discover any potential melanoma, but also give instruction on how to perform a self-check.Last summer, over 300 people received screenings from the three doctors at a similar event at Jennings Beach in Fairfield.CancerCare of Connecticut is an organization that provides free support services to anyone in the state affected by cancer, including counseling, education, financial assistance and practical help, by oncology social workers.
