Red-Tailed Hawk Strikes Fairfield Ludlowe Student

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Ludlowe’s students are used to hearing about Falcons, but now might have to worry about a different large bird. A student at the high school was struck by a red-tailed hawk Thursday afternoon, police say.

Administrators at the Unquowa Road school told police that a red-tailed hawk swooped down and struck a female student in the head at about 1:50 p.m. Thursday. The student was reportedly fine after the hit, and did not request medical attention.

Red-tailed hawks are one of the most common hawk species in North America. They can grow as large as 26 inches in length, with a wingspan of between 43 and 57 inches. They are not normally known to attack humans unless their habitats are threatened.

Police are now looking for the bird’s nest in the area around Ludlowe. “There have been several complaints about this, but to date we have not been able to locate any nests,” said Deputy Police Chief Chris Lyddy. He added that if the bird’s home is found, Fairfield Animal Control will work with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection on a “proper removal.”
