Recycling will take less effort in Fairfield starting this summer -- all gas stations and car washes in town will have to have recycling bins alongside trash cans so drivers can recycle when cleaning out their cars. The law, proposed by Representative Town Meeting Majority Leader James Millington (R-9), goes into effect July 1.
I think this is a very simple thing that is going to drastically bring up the recycling levels in this town, said David Becker, one of the bills co-sponsors.
Also on July 1, Fairfields Solid Waste and Recycling Department will begin a single-stream system, which will make recycling at home easier, too. Once the rule goes into effect, the towns recycling collectors will accept more items in blue bins from Fairfield homes.
Along with everything thats accepted now, more plastic food containers will be allowed in those bins. Instead of those coded only with No. 1 or No. 2, plastic containers marked up to No. 7 will be accepted. Cardboard containers such as egg and milk cartons as well as cereal boxes will also be collected in blue bins, along with any kind of mixed paper. And aerosol cans, as long as theyre empty, can be placed in the bin as well. A full list is available at the Solid Waste and Recycling Department website.
Large containers, yard waste, electronics and hazardous materials are still off limits for the blue bin, however. Residents must take bottles or cans of more than 3 gallons, scrap metals (including wire hangers) and electronics to the town Recycling Center on One Rod Highway, along with all bagged grass clippings and brush. The town collects household hazardous materials such as cleaners, pest and weed killers, and automotive fluids only one day per year. For 2011, the collection will be Aug. 27.
