FAIRFIELD, Conn. Police arrested a West Haven man Thursday night for an incident in which he destroyed a Southport resident's pool and stalled trains on the New Haven Line of Metro-North Railroad. Police say Matthew Miranda, 24, took a friend's car without permission and drove recklessly across her neighborhood.
The vehicles owner told police that Miranda visited her Thursday night at her home in Fairfield. He then attempted to get in her parked car. When she tried to stop him, Miranda struck her to the ground. The victim suffered bruises and cuts to her arms and elbows but refused medical attention.
Miranda then drove the vehicle around the Southport area. He eventually stopped when he struck an above-ground pool at a John Street residence, damaging the car. Police say he then fled on foot, with officers in pursuit. Officers saw Miranda run underneath the platform at the Southport train station to hide.
Train service was stopped temporarily to prevent Miranda being run over. After a while, trains began running again, and Miranda emerged from beneath the platform. He was then detained by police.
Police charged Miranda with third-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, breach of peace, using a motor vehicle without permission, reckless driving and operating without a license. He was held on $500 bond and is due in court July 25.
