Late on Friday afternoon, the state’s security monitoring system cautioned security officials that a ransomware virus had been detected within the system. The virus was later identified as the WannaCry virus.
The WannaCry ransomware virus targets computers running Microsoft Windows OS by encrypting data and demanding payments in Bitcoin. It first appeared in America in May last year.
In total, 160 computers in a dozen different agencies were impacted by the virus. The names of the agencies were not released by officials. The machines were believed to be clear of the virus by Monday, with no state business affected.
