FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Plans for a new playground and a pedestrian-friendly Fairfield led the town’s news this past week. Here are some of the top stories in Fairfield over the last week.

? The Parks and Recreation Commission met to discuss a proposal to install a new playground in honor of Sandy Hook School shooting victim Jessica Rekos. The commission decided to accept the donated playground, and place it on Penfield Beach. Neighboring Westport also broke ground on their park in honor of Dylan Hockley Friday.

? The Fairfield Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Advisory Committee released its “Master Plan” for the town’s roads this week, advocating for a “Complete Streets Policy” that would include more bike lanes and sidewalks.

? The Connecticut General Assembly wrapped up its session this week, passing a controversial state budget, voting to restrict access to crime scene photos and taking other last-day votes.

? Hurricane season returned to the Fairfield area this week, and the first tropical storm already made landfall. Storm Andrea dumped several inches of rain on the area Friday.

? The National Transportation Safety Board released its latest report on last month’s train derailment near the Fairfield border, which showed that an inspection two days before the crash found damage to a rail joint that may have caused the accident.
