FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Fairfield firefighter was hospitalized after responding to a house fire on Twin Lanes Road Sunday morning in which a family pet died. No one was inside the house at the time of the fire.
The fire started in the basement of the home, investigators believe. Firefighters arrived at about 9:16 a.m., after receiving a report of heavy black smoke coming from the home. By that time the blaze had spread to the first and second floors and into the attic.
The family pet was believed to have died from smoke inhalation. A crew member was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but was otherwise fine. Fire Marshal Bill Kessler is still investigating the incident.
