FAIRFIELD, Conn. "Peace poles" were taken from two Fairfield elementary schools over Christmas break, according to police reports. Administrators at Stratfield School and North Stratfield School told police the decorative peace poles were taken from outside the schools' front entrances.
The poles are made of hard wood and stand about six feet tall when pulled out of the ground. Each of their four sides reads Peace on Earth translated into four languages. Both schools received the poles as a donation.

Stephen Martin, 39, of Norwalk was charged with burglary and identity theft Wednesday in connection with a case that occurred in October. A customer at Starbucks on the Post Road in Fairfield told police on Oct. 5 that her purse was stolen from her car, which was parked on Carter Henry Drive. An iPad, an iPhone, and credit cards were inside the bag.
A man attempted to use one of the stolen credit cards at Norwalks Walmart store two days later to purchase mobile phones and a flat-screen television. The card was declined, but police used video surveillance from the store and the parking lot outside to identify Martin as a suspect in the theft and apply for an arrest warrant.
Martin was arrested Wednesday and charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny, credit card theft and three counts each of identity theft and illegal use of a credit card. His bond was set at $15,000, and he is due in court on Jan. 24.
