FAIRFIELD, Conn. An attic fan started a fire at a Fairfield home Monday evening. No one was injured, and Fairfield Fire Department crews doused the blaze before it caused structural damage.
The Fire Department received a call from a neighbor who saw flames coming from the roof of an Old Dam Road home at about 6:30 p.m. Monday. The neighbor then alerted the family, which had left the house safely by the time firefighters arrived.
First responders found that the fire was caused by a full-house attic fan and quickly put it out. The family was able to return once the fan was removed. The fire caused only minor smoke and water damage to the attic. But Incident Commander Asst. Chief Scott Bisson warned about using large, unseen appliances.
Homeowners should use caution when using appliances that have not been used for a period of time, or if they are uncertain that the appliance is in good working order, Bisson said.
