One of the areas the NTSB is investigating is the non-traditional third rail configuration. During the crash the third rail splintered and penetrated both the SUV stuck on the tracks and the first car of the train, LoHud.com reported.
The NTSB is not expected to comment on the crash until the preliminary report is released during the week of Feb. 23-27, LoHud.com said.
