A Norwalk man was arrested Tuesday morning for allegedly attempting to pull a home repair scam on a Fairfield homeowner. Male Demetros, 25, allegedly charged a Barn Hill Road resident more than $10,000 for work he did not finish and was not licensed to perform.
The Barn Hill Road woman told police she hired Demetros to remove mold from a wall in her dining room Feb. 27. She said she initially paid Demetros $2,600. Demetros did some work but later told the homeowner that more needed to be done, which would cost an additional $8,650.
After receiving the second payment, Demetros did not return to finish the job. The resident called Fairfield police, who discovered that he was a licensed contractor. They issued a warrant for his arrest, and he reported to police headquarters Tuesday morning.
Demetros was charged with two counts of offering home repairs without a license, a failure to issue a three-day notice (by state law, contractors must give homeowners three days to cancel any repairs before beginning work), failure to issue a buyers rights notification and second-degree larceny. He was held on $50,000 bond and arraigned Tuesday morning.
