FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Fairfield bus caught fire while taking kids home from school Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze.
The bus was taking kids home from Fairfield Woods Middle School when it began to smoke near Verna Hill Road and Greenfield Hill Road. Bus driver William Strickland ushered the 10 students still on board off the bus before using a fire extinguisher to contain the blaze before firefighters arrived.
The children all got off the bus without injury due to the early recognition and swift actions of the driver, said Fire Chief Richard Felner. Strickland was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene but was not seriously hurt or hospitalized.
Fairfield firefighters doused the blaze shortly after it had spread from the rear engine compartment to the passenger area. Department of Public Works crews and First Student bus company representatives also arrived to help clean the fluid runoff from the bus engine. Fire Marshal Bill Kessler was investigating the cause.
