FAIRFIELD, Conn. Two Fairfield residents have reported seeing a wild mountain lion in town in the past week. Fairfield Police say the reports of a big cat came from Greenfield Hill. They advise residents to take precautions to avoid a possible attack.
The first sighting came Tuesday afternoon at about 4 p.m. A neighbor spotted the animal in the area of Old Academy Road near Redding Road. Another Fairfielder saw a big cat along Mine Hill Road near Verna Hill Road about a mile away at 8 a.m. Friday. Greenwich residents have spotted a mountain lion in that town over the past few weeks.
Police warn that mountain lions will attack humans or pets if threatened. As a precaution, police recommend keeping children indoors at dawn or dusk. They also suggest installing motion-sensor lighting or scattering mothballs or ammonia-soaked rags in your backyard to ward off the predator. When hiking in wooded areas, stay in groups and keep dogs on a leash. Police also recommend carrying a walking stick, pepper spray or anything else that could be used as a weapon in case of an attack.
If face-to-face with a mountain lion, experts say you should gather your children, keep eye contact and back away slowly. Also make sure not to approach the animal and to allow it a way to escape. If you spot a mountain lion in Fairfield, call police dispatch at (203) 254-4800.
