Metro-North Failed To Fix Track Flaw Before Fairfield Derailment

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The engineer driving the Metro-North train that derailed last year on the Fairfield-Bridgeport border said he noticed something amiss with the tracks moments before the train jumped the rails, according to ctpost.com.

Steven Bauer's comments were part of his testimony to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is currently investigating the May 17, 2013 derailment, ctpost.com said.

The NTSB is investigating the derailment and has concluded that the incident was a result of a broken stretch of track that had been repaired two months earlier. The same section of track had broken again but was not repaired before the derailment occurred, injuring 70 passengers and disrupting service for days, ctpost.com reported.
