FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield started off its week still dealing with the aftermath of the train derailment and collision, but things were back to normal sooner than expected. Here are some of Fairfield’s top stories from the past week.

? Commuters braced for a rough commute early in the week, as Metro-North trains were replaced by buses in Fairfield on Monday and Tuesday mornings. But officials reported things went smoothly both days, and trains came back online Tuesday afternoon.

? The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the accident. On Friday, the board released information that said an engineer saw “unusual conditions” before the crash, and that the section of rails needed repairs last month.

? Fairfield’s Representative Town Meeting rearranged the town’s voting districts this week, shrinking the number of districts from 10 to eight. The RTM approved the plan by a party-line vote despite opposition from the Democratic Party and the Town Attorney.

? The Board of Education finalized its budget for the next school year Tuesday, making adjustments to programs and adding fees to make up for reductions made by the other town boards.

? The Fairfield Ludlowe High School renovation project took a step forward Wednesday, earning the approval of the Board of Selectmen.

? Fairfield Police, the FBI and other agencies made arrests in connection with last month’s kidnapping and armed robbery involving Lenox Jewelers. Five suspects are now in police custody relating to the theft of more than $4 million in jewelry from the store in April.
