Man Charged With Check Forgery in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Redding man was charged with check forgery in Fairfield Wednesday. Robert Hecht took checks from a family member and attempted to cash them for $1,230 at Fairfield banks last summer, police said.

The checking account holder, a Fairfield resident, told police last June that Hecht had stolen her checkbook. Police said an investigation found that he had attempted to cash one of the checks at a local People’s United Bank branch. When the clerk refused, he fled, leaving his identification behind, according to police reports.

At the time, Hecht told officers he had thrown out the remaining checks. No charges were filed at the request of the family.

However, four more transactions were charged against the account. The withdrawals were traced back to Hecht, police say.

Hecht was charged with fourth-degree larceny and first-degree forgery Wednesday. He was released on a promise to appear in court on April 11.
