James W. Boston Was 'Loved by All'

James William Boston, an active Fairfield resident for the past 45 years, died Aug. 17, four days before his birthday. He was 67.

Jim, as he was known, was born Aug. 21, 1942, in Pittsburgh to the late John H. and Christine (Hoffman) Boston.

He was the band teacher at Coleytown Middle School in Westport for 35 years until he retired in 2000. After retiring, Boston spent a lot of his time camping with his family and working at the Fairfield Senior Center as a bus driver. Claire Grace, director of the senior center, said he would be greatly missed by all who knew him.

"Jim Boston was one of the most wonderful men I have ever met. He was wise, kind to everyone and loved by all," Grace said via e-mail. "Jim's passing was a terrible loss to us."

After graduating from Carnegie Institute of Technology with bachelor degrees in education and performance, Boston went on to receive a master's in education from the University of Bridgeport.

He was the first director of the former Fairfield Teen Center and was active in youth programs at First Church Congregational of Fairfield. He also worked at Silver Lake Conference Center.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Barbara Bowman Boston; four daughters, Heather Garbacik and husband Edward of South Hadley, Mass., Holly Routhier and husband Robert of Fairfield, Sarah Barker and husband Alex of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Rebecca Dowd and husband James of Fairfield; sister Jean Fullen and husband William of New York City; and 13 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at First Church Congregational in Fairfield in the fall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or by calling 1-800-805-5856.
