Fairfield resident James J. Mascia Jr. died suddenly Monday, March 7, at St. Vincents Medical Center at the age of 64. Mascia was a beloved baseball and football coach for Fairfields youth teams.
Mascia was born in Norwalk on Nov. 14, 1946. He was a sheet metal mechanic and a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local 38 until his retirement. Outside of his work, Mascia was a coach for Fairfield youth baseball teams across many levels. He also coached football and served on the Fairfield Pop Warner Board of Directors.
Mascia was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He was the proud owner of three Irish wolfhounds Jack, Roddy and Blue at the time of his death and was a member of the Irish Wolfhound Association of New England and the Garden State.
Mascia is survived by his wife of 41 years, Vanisse; his son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Kathryn Howell Mascia of Stratford; two daughters, Stephanie Falcone and husband Darryl of Stratford and Catharine M. Mascia and her significant other, Donald Brown III of Fairfield; his sister, Melody Fagan and husband Michael of Newtown; his sister-in-law, Lois Mascia of Wallingford; and three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Carmine.
Calling hours are Thursday, March 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Shaugnessey-Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary St. Georges Episcopal Church, 755 Clinton Ave., Bridgeport.
