It's a Great Weekend for The Irish!

The luck o' the Irish has returned to Fairfield after a seven-year absence when the Fairfield County Irish Festival hits the Fairfield University campus this weekend. Last year it was supposed to be in Trumbull, but was canceled when the town balked over the cleanup. This will be the 22nd year of the festival.

After 15 years in Fairfield at Ludlowe High School and Jennings Beach, it was held in Bridgeport at Seaside Park and Indian Ledge Park in Trumbull.

Feile, Inc., a group started by members of the Fairfield Gaelic-American Club to promote and preserve Irish culture, is the sponsor.

The festival includes Irish music, dance, crafts, sports and food. It begins at 6 p.m. tonight and runs until 11 p.m. before beginning again at noon on Saturday. It runs until 11 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Area teams will compete in Gaelic football and soccer throughout the weekend.

Proceeds from the festival will go to the organization's charitable efforts. In the past, donations have been made to Gaelic football and hurling clubs in Connecticut, the Irish Literary Club, Clan na Gael Players theater, college scholarships, Paul Newman's camps and more.

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for students (with ID), while children under 16 are free if accompanied by an adult. Three-day passes are $20.

There will be no parking on the Fairfield University campus, except for those with handicapped stickers. Free shuttle service will be provided from the railroad station, Tomlinson Middle School and Ludlowe High School, all located on Unquowa Road.
