Oil has now been spilling into the Gulf of Mexico for over two months and Congressman Jim Himes and others in Washington D.C. are trying to ensure that BP is held responsible for the disaster. BP leased the offshore drilling unit that sank, causing the spill that has sent 35,000 to 65,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf each day.
Himes voted to pass legislation that will grant subpoena power to the commission established to investigate the BP oil spill, which was formed in early May.
While the legislation passed the House of Representatives, it has stalled in the Senate, where attempts to bring the bill to the floor with unanimous consent have been blocked.
We will hold BP accountable for absolutely all the costs economic and environmental of the spill that their irresponsible action caused, said Himes. This bipartisan commission must have every resource at its disposal to conduct a thorough analysis of the failures that led to this tragedy."
The commission's goal is to investigate the causes of the oil spill and make recommendations to prevent future spills.
