Gov. Malloy Directs U.S., Connecticut Flags At Half-Staff Through Saturday

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has directed that all U.S. and Connecticut flags throughout the state remain at half-staff this week to honor the five service members slain in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The flags will remain at half-staff through sundown on July 25, per a proclamation from President Barack Obama.

Killed in the act of terrorism on July 16 at military centers in Tennessee’s fourth-biggest city were Marines Carson Holmquist of Grantburg, Wis.; Thomas Sullivan of Springfield, Mass.; Skip Wells of Marietta, Ga.; and David Wyatt of Hixson, Tenn. Navy Petty Officer Second Class Randall Smith died from his wounds on July 18 at a Tennessee hospital.

Police shot and killed the shooter, Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, after the 24 year old opened fire on a military recruiting center and a Navy training reserve center.

“Connecticut and the nation stands with the people of Tennessee and the many communities that have been devastated by this tragedy,” said Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman in joint statement on July 20. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims as they are laid to rest -- and with the states across the nation who are mourning the loss of their citizens.”
