Aquarion Water Co. was on the scene and making repairs, police said. Service outages were expected for an unknown period of time.
The water main break was caused when a vehicle traveling on Godfrey Road struck a fire hydrant, causing it to separate from its base, police said.
The impact to the hydrant resulted in pressure on the water main, causing it to break, police said.
It was not clear Thursday evening when repairs would be done to restore water service or when the road would reopen to traffic.
