Firefighters Endorse Fawcett

The Fairfield Firefighters Association unanimously voted Monday to endorse state Rep. Kim Fawcett, D-133, in her race for a third term in office.

"The Fairfield firefighters have always supported candidates that support firefighter issues and promote our safety," said firefighter Bob Smith, the association's president. "Kim has showed she is serious about firefighter safety and helps make sure we continue to provide the best service we can to the citizens of Fairfield by making sure we have the tools we need to get the job done right."

DeeDee Brandt, a former member of the Fairfield Representative Town Meeting, is challenging Fawcett for the district seat, which also includes part of Westport.

Fawcett said she is "honored" to receive the association's endorsement.

"Many [of the firefighters] I know personally," Fawcett said. "We are so fortunate to have them there when we need them, and I am proud to support their efforts."

Originally elected in 2006 by defeating Republican Cathy Tymniak, Fawcett won her re-election bid in 2008 by defeating Fairfield University student Amanda Parks.

She said her experience with the Fairfield Fire Department reinforces her desire to support them. Fawcett's daughter was involved in a car accident in 2009 and the fire department responded to assist her.

"They were at my home within minutes and made sure my daughter was transported safely to the hospital " said Fawcett. "I will never forget how calmly, efficiently and compassionately they managed such a traumatic event."
