Fire Chief Honored as a "Good Scout"

Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner says the lessons he learned as a Boy Scout were invaluable in preparing him for a life as a first responder. Yesterday he received a "Good Scout Award," presented each year by the area scouting organization to individuals who exemplify scouting values and make contributions to the community. Also receiving awards at the ceremony, held at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn, were Democratic State Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo and People's United Bank South Division President Armando Gonclaves.

"It was quite an honor to be recognized," Felner said. "Especially since it's been a few years since I was a Scout. The qualities of happiness, courage and balance are critical to your success, whether you're serving your community as a Boy Scout or a first responder."

Felner said those scouting qualities are the ones he asks new firefighters to display.

The fund-raiser brought in $50,000, according to former honoree and Boy Scout Wiley Mullins of Bridgeport, who presided over the event. Mullins said area Scouts are trying to raise additional funds in order to provide a Boy Scout Troop or Cub Scout Pack in every school in Bridgeport.
